Veeam alternatives that cover comparable enterprise ground, as of October 2026, include Commvault, Cohesity (DataProtect and NetBackup), Rubrik, Arcserve UDP, NAKIVO, Druva and HYCU, with Proxmox Backup Server for estates that run only Proxmox VE. None replaces Veeam one for one, so an evaluation starts with what Veeam Data Platform covers today, then checks each alternative’s own documentation for workloads, immutability, recovery features, licensing unit and where its control plane runs.

What Veeam covers today
This is the scope a replacement has to match, taken from Veeam’s own pages. List prices are on the Veeam pricing page.
| Item | What Veeam documents |
|---|---|
| Products | Veeam Data Platform (on premises; Foundation, Advanced and Premium editions), Veeam Data Cloud (SaaS), Veeam Kasten (Kubernetes) |
| Current release | Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1.1, released August 13, 2026 |
| Hypervisors | vSphere, Hyper-V, Azure Local, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE, HPE Morpheus VM Essentials, Scale Computing HyperCore, oVirt KVM, XCP-ng, Citrix XenServer, Sangfor aSV |
| Other workloads | Windows, Linux, AIX, Solaris and Mac computers; AWS, Azure and Google Cloud; unstructured data; Entra ID |
| SaaS | Microsoft 365 and Salesforce, sold and licensed separately |
| Immutability | Hardened repository on Linux; Veeam Data Cloud Vault |
| Recovery | Instant Recovery from backup files; SureBackup tests in an isolated virtual lab |
| Licensing unit | Per workload, under the portable Veeam Universal License |
Two details carry into any migration. Files in a hardened repository can be merged or deleted only after their immutability period expires, and the role “requires the block storage,” so NFS and SMB targets don’t qualify. Kubernetes protection (Veeam Kasten) is licensed separately; see the Kubernetes backup buyer’s guide.
Software you run
Alphabetical within each group, not ranked. Each entry relies only on the vendor’s own documentation; the comparison table adds immutability, recovery, licensing and control plane detail.
Arcserve UDP
Arcserve UDP protects VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV and Proxmox with agentless and agent-based options, plus physical and cloud machines, with instant VM and bare-metal recovery and automated recovery testing. Its console runs in Arcserve’s cloud or on premises, and Microsoft 365 is a separate Arcserve SaaS Backup product. Licensing is per OS instance, per populated CPU socket or per front-end terabyte.
Cohesity NetBackup
Cohesity completed its combination with Veritas’ enterprise data protection business on December 10, 2024, and now presents NetBackup as part of Cohesity Data Cloud, with the option to keep, extend or transform existing NetBackup environments. Its page highlights NetBackup 11.2 and lists AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, Windows and Linux files, VMs and Kubernetes. NetBackup terms license by front-end terabytes, CPU or traditional licenses.
Commvault
Commvault’s license guide (May 2026) covers VMs, containers, physical systems, NAS and cloud storage, endpoints, SaaS applications and PaaS, delivered as customer-managed software, integrated appliances or SaaS. Supported hypervisors include vSphere, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV and Proxmox VE, where full VM and guest file restores are documented. Commvault AirGap is immutable cloud storage that Commvault manages outside the customer’s own tenant, and Commvault Cleanroom provides an isolated environment for testing recovery plans and forensics. See Commvault vs Veeam.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication
NAKIVO Backup & Replication, at v11.2.2, supports vSphere, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE 8.x to 9.2, Amazon EC2, physical Windows and Linux, Microsoft 365, Oracle Database (RMAN) and file shares. Its subscription counts one VM, one physical server or three workstations as one workload; perpetual licenses are per CPU socket.
Proxmox Backup Server
For estates on Proxmox VE alone, Proxmox Backup Server 4.2 (April 29, 2026) is AGPLv3 software for VMs, containers and physical hosts. Every feature works at every subscription level; plans differ in support. Its docs describe a removable protected flag rather than a time-based retention lock; the Proxmox Backup Server guide covers its controls.
Platforms with SaaS control
Cohesity DataProtect
DataProtect lists VMware vSphere, Nutanix, Hyper-V and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization; Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB and Cassandra; AWS, GCP, Azure and OCI; and Microsoft 365, Exchange and Salesforce. For Proxmox VE, Cohesity’s 2024 method stores Proxmox’s native backups on an immutable Cohesity NFS view, restored with Proxmox workflows. FortKnox, a managed cyber vault on AWS, Azure and GCP, serves both DataProtect and NetBackup. Management can be Cohesity-managed SaaS, or Helios Self-Managed entirely on premises.
Rubrik Security Cloud
Rubrik documents VMware vSphere, Hyper-V and Nutanix (AHV, ESXi and Hyper-V), plus physical systems, databases, NAS, Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft 365, Jira and Salesforce. Proxmox VE support is generally available, using a backup agent on the hypervisor and managed through a single SaaS control plane. Rubrik Cloud Vault is a fully managed, isolated vault on Azure or AWS, and Rubrik Cyber Recovery tests recovery plans in isolated environments. See Veeam vs Rubrik and Rubrik vs Cohesity.
SaaS backup
Druva
Druva runs as a fully managed service with no customer infrastructure. Its support matrix lists file servers, NAS, VMware, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE, OpenStack and Hyper-V VMs, SQL Server, Oracle, SAP HANA, and Azure and AWS workloads; SaaS coverage adds Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Salesforce, Entra ID and Okta. Backups can land in AWS or Azure storage regions. Enterprise workloads are billed in credits: one credit is one TB of deduplicated, compressed backup data stored for a month.
HYCU
HYCU R-Cloud protects SaaS and cloud services as a service. For infrastructure, HYCU R-Cloud Hybrid Cloud Edition v5.3.0 (July 2026) covers Nutanix, VMware, XenServer, Azure Local, Hyper-V, AWS GovCloud (US), Azure, and file and object servers, but runs as a backup controller VM you deploy. Licensing is per CPU socket, core or VM, by capacity, or pay-as-you-go. The guide doesn’t list Proxmox VE.
Native and hypervisor tools
AWS Backup centralizes backup across AWS services and on premises. Azure Backup covers Azure workloads and, through agents, files, Hyper-V and VMware. Microsoft 365 Backup covers SharePoint, OneDrive and Exchange, with a recovery window configurable to 3 months, 6 months, 1 year or 2 years; see native vs third-party Microsoft 365 backup. Each replaces Veeam for one platform, not across a mixed estate.

Migrating off Veeam
Keep old points readable. Veeam’s licensing docs say “restore does not require licenses.” After a subscription lapses there is a 30-day grace period; then jobs stop, though the help center says “you will be able to restore machine data from existing backups.” Veeam’s licensing policy says VUL expiration, after the grace period, will “disable all product functionality.” Get Veeam’s position in writing before the last renewal lapses.
Restore without the server. Veeam’s extract utility recovers machines from backup files on Windows or Linux without Veeam Backup & Replication installed. Imported backups need the full chain in one folder, and encrypted ones need their passwords, so archive both.
Plan for immutable leftovers. Hardened repository files stay until their immutability period expires, so budget that hardware until the last point ages out under your backup retention policy.
Run in parallel, then test. Run both products on each workload class until the new one has full backups and passing test restores, then stop new Veeam jobs and let old points age out. Test restores of old Veeam points too. The backup restore testing guide covers the drill.
How to decide: evaluation checklist
- Workload coverage: match every hypervisor version and application to the vendor’s support matrix, not its marketing page.
- Immutability: ask who can shorten retention and whether the isolated copy sits outside your accounts; see the immutable backup storage comparison and air gapped backup guide.
- Ransomware detection: confirm whether scanning runs at backup, before restore or both, and which edition includes it.
- Recovery testing: check for automated, isolated test restores, such as SureBackup, Commvault Cleanroom or Rubrik’s recovery simulation.
- RTO features: verify instant recovery per hypervisor; Rubrik’s Proxmox post describes an export recovery workflow.
- Cloud tiering: list supported object targets and who pays egress.
- Licensing unit: model three years of growth on each unit: workload, socket, front-end TB, back-end TB, credits or users.
- Support model: ask what restores remain after a subscription ends. Commvault’s guide says expired software licenses keep “all access to the previously protected data” for recovery; SaaS terms differ.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Veeam?
No single product fits every estate. Proxmox VE alone points to Proxmox Backup Server; mixed hypervisors with self-hosted control point to Arcserve, Commvault or NAKIVO; a SaaS control plane with a vendor-managed vault points to Cohesity, Commvault or Rubrik; no backup infrastructure at all points to Druva; Nutanix-heavy estates should add HYCU to the shortlist.
Can I keep my old Veeam backups if I switch?
Yes, with planning. Restores don’t consume Veeam licenses, and the extract utility recovers machines from backup files without a Veeam server. Veeam’s help center and licensing policy differ on what works after a subscription’s grace period, so confirm in writing and archive encryption passwords.
Who are Veeam’s main competitors?
For enterprise backup, Commvault, Cohesity, Rubrik, Arcserve, NAKIVO, Druva and HYCU each document overlapping coverage. Cloud-native tools such as AWS Backup, Azure Backup and Microsoft 365 Backup compete for single-platform workloads.
Is there a free alternative to Veeam Backup & Replication?
Proxmox Backup Server is free, open-source software, and its subscriptions add support rather than features, but it targets Proxmox VE and Linux hosts. Veeam’s own free edition is covered on the Veeam pricing page.
